Coaching Philosophy: Academic Guidance and Mentorship
Coaching Philosophy
Webster’s Dictionary defines a coach as someone who instructs and teaches. My philosophy as a head coach is deeply rooted in this definition. I believe my calling is to lead and teach young men, using the sport of basketball as a tool.
One of the most important characteristics of my coaching philosophy is integrity. I am direct and up front with my athletes and their parents, starting with the first recruitment encounter. I give recruits an understanding of how my staff and I run my program and what we expect of them. Every team I have coached has improved as a result of me being direct and honest with them. This only helps them understand what the program stresses on a daily basis.

I view myself as a “player’s coach." I have always tried to relate to student-athlete’s needs, both on and off the court. I look at myself as a teacher who always has open lines of communication and can communicate effectively. My personality is one that is built on patience and understanding. I feel this becomes extremely important and necessary in the high-expectation and anxiety filled atmosphere that college athletics presents.
I think my job as head coach is not just about life on the basketball court; it goes beyond that. It is important that my staff and I develop a program that will prepare our student-athletes for life after basketball. We are able to do so by providing our team with a balanced and structured approach, focusing on the development of the entire person academically, athletically, and socially. This enables us to properly develop our team, as great representatives of the University.
I ensure the success of my program and the student-athletes by focusing on clear-cut goals, as well as the following elements: recruiting, academics, fundraising and alumni relations, community involvement, conditioning/individual improvement, offense, defense, and media and public relations.

Basketball Philosophy
I strongly believe that as a coach I have to create a style and system that reflects the strengths and weaknesses that my current basketball team possesses. However, there will certainly be some noticeable characteristics of a Montez Robinson coached team. Our team’s personality and these characteristics will be shaped through the recruiting process and in practice. We will be extremely physical and dominant especially on the defensive end of the floor. My teams will also be very aggressive rebounders on both ends of the floor. Being one of the best rebounding teams will enable us to get out in transition and score easy baskets when the opportunity presents itself.
Offense
The team will have the ability to push the ball up the court and fill lanes to get behind the defense. In the half court set, look to run motions, pick and roll action, and the ability to consistently score off of our quick hitters and offensive sets. Players will also have the knowledge of when penetration is taken away; we can then counter with kick out three pointers. We will effectively score the ball inside and have a scoring presence in the lane by both post players and guards. The team will have the ability to play inside out and cut without the basketball. Offensive rebounds are imperative when looking to get second chance opportunities at scoring.
Defense
Have the ability to play various zone defenses like 2-3 zone, 3-2 zone, match-up zones, 1-3-1 zones, and any variations that will be based on personnel. We should have the ability to switch defenses to confuse the offense and continue to work hard defensively to create easy offense. Rebounding will be a key as we look to limit teams to one shot.
In today’s fast-paced game, transition defense is critical. More than running back to the paint, communication with your teammates and awareness of the opponent, must be effectively carried out.
